FORWARD
We are witnessing a period of renewed public interest in the Maritime Industry, triggered
most probably by increased awareness of the importance of the maritime sector in National
and Global Economies and diverse challenges associated with sustaining a viable Maritime
Sector.
As part of its contribution towards the development of the, industry, Global Maritime Academy
(GMA), a private indigenous initiative, organized an International Maritime Conference on the
12th August 2009 in Effurun, Delta State, to address prevailing concerns and came up with
guided recommendations that have the potentials of not only reviving the Global Maritime
Industry, but also repositioning it to become a major player in our presently delicate and
monolithic economy.
The proceedings of the conference cover issues on: the current status of Nigerian seaports,
Re-engineering the ports for sustainable development, A critical review of the coastal and
Inland Shipping (CABOTAGE) Act of 2003; Peace Keeping Strategies: A Tool for Sustainable
Development in the Niger Delta and a Keynote address titled "Invisible Trade: Raising the
Visibility of the Maritime Sector in a Season of Global Economic Crises - Issues and
Challenges.”
The conference was well attended with high level participation by the maritime sector,
allied industries such a Oil and Gas, Financial Institutions, the Academia. Indigenous
Entrepreneurs and the Mass Media.
It concluded with a comprehensive communiqué.
This book of proceedings will no doubt be valuable to the Federal Government, State Governments
, relevant ministries, Parastatals, Agencies, NGOs, policy makers, Financial Institutions,
the Academia, indigenous investors and all patriotic Nigerians.
